The US has a military reserve which was formed in order to keep citizens in a state or readiness or preparedness for war, armed conflict or any kind of national emergency. Individuals who join the US military reserve can continue to lead civilian lives while still making a contribution and having some link with the military. The reserve service rendered very valuable during the world war. Since the end of the draft in 1973, the reserve has been a good way to keep individuals trained and connected with the US military.

Joining the military reserve can be a good option for people who want to continue to live in the area that they do or for those who are reluctant to go in for full time active duty or military careers. Individuals can continue to live in the area, with their family and enjoy a civilian lifestyle and career while at the same time enjoying many of the benefits to being in the military.

You can be a military reserve with any of the military branches and come from any walk of life. While reserves are typically required to work only 2 days a month and two weeks a year, full time military careers can be arduous and working hours may vary substantially.

Military recruiting for army jobs and navy jobs in the enlisted category have several points in common: candidates have to be between 17 and 35 years of age, US citizens or possessing permanent resident status and applicants have to pass a written exam (the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). Applicants also have to meet certain minimum physical criteria like height, weight, vision and overall health. Most army jobs and navy jobs require applicants to be high school graduates. Military recruiting into all branches offers a delayed entry program by which an applicant may delay entry into active duty for up to one year after enlisting. In the event you can enlist during senior year you can enter the service after your graduation. You can even take the benefit of the delayed entry program if the job training you want is not currently available.
